Our Data Migration Process and Strategy
Data migration is the process of moving data from one or more sources into a target system or database. It is one of the most important steps in every ERP implementation project. Over the 18 years of work in data management, SAPMD has developed an effective data migration process and strategy.
Data Migration Service from SAPMD
Data migration is one of the most challenging parts of ERP implementation projects. First of all, data of good quality must be loaded to the target system on time at every step of the implementation project. Starting from functional tests on the quality system, through acceptance and go-live in the production environment.

Data Migration Process Overview
Our data migration strategy depends on the size and the complexity of the project. Moreover, we will always select the best approach for the implementation. Overall, our data migration plan consists of a number of steps.
Define the scope
At the assessment stage, we will define the scope of data migration, which includes the source systems, data that will be migrated, fields in scope, responsible people, the sequence, planning, and data standards. Also, we define the data collection methods and storage. For example, Excel files for data gathering, or staging area databases.
Prepare the data
Before performing the migration, we need to ensure that your data meets your standards, is of excellent quality, is not duplicated, and no redundant data is moved. Data Migration Workbench is our first choice when it comes to data quality because the data can be cleaned and prepared for the migration by your company. The data can be initially extracted from your source systems with the help of the SQL engine built in the Data Migration Workbench or with an ETL (Extract, Transform, and Load) tool, like BODS (Business Objects Data Services).
Load the data
There are a few systems and tools we use to load the data.
- For ECC system versions (NetWeaver) we use Legacy System Migration Workbench (LSMW). We have already covered a wide range of modules (FI, CO, SD, MM, PP, QM) and corresponding migration templates. These can be reused in your projects at reduced cost, which is especially noticeable during the build phase.
- For S/4HANA we use BODS (Business Object Data Services) where we call BAPI to create data in SAP. Alternatively, in S/4HANA we use Data Migration Cockpit (DMC).
- For Navision projects, we choose RapidStart.
